none of this has satisfied those leading the witch hunt against chuck hagel. during a google hangout this afternoon the president weighed in on the first ever filibuster of a secretary of defense nominee. >> it's just unfortunate that this kind of politics intrudes at a time when i'm still presiding over a war in afghanistan and i need a secretary of defense who is coordinating with our allies to make sure that our troops are getting the kind of strategy and mission that they deserve. >> all right. let's go to the big panel tonight. let's turn to bloomberg view columnist jonathan alter with us. also michelle goldberg of "newsweek" and the daily beast. and david corn of "mother jones" magazine. great to have all of you with us. jonathan, you first tonight. is this unprecedented filibuster a sign that the senate is totally broken? what do you make of what unfolded today? >> well, i just think it's a really unfortunate signal that the united states is sending to the world when as the president indicated you have, you know, conflicts abroad. and for us to say that

the only person they can whack right now is chuck hagel. i mean, chuck hagel is a perfectly acceptable defense secretary. and privately, most republicans would say the same thing. but for a whole host of reasons, the only person that the republican right can go after right now is hagel, and they're going to do it. >> yeah. >> and i think it's possible that they won't get the 60 votes, that the democrats won't get the 60 votes to shut off debate to invoke cloture on friday. and it will go another week. it's possible. >> this will be the 113th just like the 112th. starting out with a bang. neera tanden, howard fineman, great to have you with us tonight. share your thoughts on twitter at ed show and on facebook. we always want to know what you think. >>> marco rubio had major problems with things coming into his mouth. tonight how rubio's biggest problem really was the stuff that was coming out of his mouth. we'll be right back. first kid you ready? all you have to do is look at the chuck hagel situation in the senate to see just how bad everything is right now. but i want you to imagine liberals, just imagine what it would be like if we had 60 senators like this. >> i'm really concerned that too big to fail has become too big for trial. that just seems wrong to me. >> it sure does. newly elected senator from massachusetts elizabeth warren is doing what she promised to do. she is ready to lead the way on accountability for the financial industry, and for good reason. you see, the federal reserve says the 2008 financial collapse cost this country 38.8% of its net worth. despite the massive fraud and recklessness of the banks, the number of executives prosecuted for this crisis zero. before today, there is no accountability. now, the frank/dodd financial regulation bill was watered down and not fully implemented. senator warren used her first banking committee hearing to take on the regulators who were supposed to be enforcing the laws. instead, they take some money and turned a blind eye. >> i know there have been some landmark s

and for that reason, there is people, including chuck hagel, who are supportive of drone technology, because it minimizes u.s. risk. but that -- that is a separate conversation. the operation conversation is separate from the legal one. and i think there is more information that is needed to figure out just exactly how we determine who is an imminent threat, who is an al qaeda operative. how do we make those determinations? who is involved in making the determinations before we launch the drone strike. i think those are very weighty questions that deserve more of a public hearing. >> well, the number of strikes versus the bush administration, colonel, very different. obviously, this is how the obama team wants to execute the war on terror. and the broad range, you're okay with it. but what do you tell innocent folks that get killed or an american that might be hit by a strike inadvertently? >> well, there is nothing you can say about that. war is a messy business. even technologically precise war like this. you raise an interesting point about this president. the first month he was i

last night we told you about how the conservative website breitbart.com reported that chuck hagel may have financial ties to a group called friends of hamas. we've got a problem here, folks. friends of hamas does not exist, and the story is bogus. yet the folks at breitbart are not only sticking to the report, they're attacking anyone who even questions it. this is the way conservative media operates these days in the business world. worse yet, instead of throwing water on these baseless stories, elected officials are fueling the fire by responding to them. senator rand paul said he found hagel's possible tied to a non-existent group concerning. and earlier this week senator lindsey graham of south carolina demanded that hagel respond to a rumor about him published by another right-wing blog. in both cases the claims had absolutely no merit. yet pushing these stories helped the right-wing media and republican lawmakers further their agenda. smear hagel and undermine ultimately president obama. senator cruz was recently criticized for making some unverified allegations against chuck hagel last month. angela, what about this? is cruz just trying to make a name for himself with the tea party, or is he really on a witch-hunt? >> senator cruz is a rebel without a legitimate cause. i don't know what is going on with him. but every time you turn around, there is some new hyperbole that he is spewing. and today to see him talking about, you know, the president is the most radical president ever, i'm sorry, but i want to know what the definition of radical is, because to me, radical is a president who would come up with a mass communications campaign to deceive the american public into believing there are weapons of mass destruction. i hardly see anything that president obama has done as radical. >> senator barbara boxer loosely compared ted cruz to joe mccarthy. john nichols, your thoughts. that a fair comparison? >> sure it is. when you suggest that there are communists on a faculty, and then when you're pressed about it you don't answer the questions, you play around with it, th
